Indian Steps Trail
I've recently discovered that hiking after a root canal is not a fun time. However, I had to do it for the blog. Yesterday afternoon Scout and I went to hike Indian Steps Trail to the Mid-State Trail.
Indian Steps Trail is a 3.9 mile loop located near State College, PA. Located deep down a gravel road in the middle of Rothrock State Forest it's slightly difficult to find without using your GPS to get there.
The trail is mostly a vertical incline up the side of a mountain, or as some people would cal it, "A fairly large hill." Mainly covered in leaves and sticks the trail is very rough and rocky and might be a challenging hike for those who aren't experienced hikers.
Once you've reached the top of the mountain you can either continue down the other side continuing on the Indian Steps Trail, or you can turn left or right and head to the Mid-State Trail.
For this hike I decided to go left and right and hike a few minutes each way to see what there was along the trail. Off to the right, about a hundred yards over is an opening in the trees that allows you to look over the mountain and admire the view of the forest. Just be care! The overlook is a very rocky plain and it's easy to slip and possibly injure yourself!
Off to the left the trail goes on forever, mainly covered in more sticks and leaves the trees seem to cover the view. You can continue to hike for miles, except the sun was setting and it was time to head home.
The way back down the trail was slightly worse than trying to hike up, while I wasn't as winded going down, it's very difficult to find a good place to set your feet without the rocks and dirt shifting and sliding underneath you. So if you decide to hike Indian Steps, be sure to let someone know where you're going, take a friend, and be careful! The trail is beautiful and the hike is quiet, but definitely the most difficult hike I've had yet!
