Hiking in the Wind River Range
In the summer of 2018, I was in the mountains of Wyoming on the trails heading to Titcomb Basin. My family decided to go on a hiking trip that turned into everyone fishing for the “golden trout.” The first day, we had our packs all ready the night before at our campground in Montana. We had a two-hour drive to the trailhead. Once we all got to the trailhead we signed into the book that stated who we are hiking with and where we are planning on going for how long, the book helps people that are maintaining the trial know how many people should be there and if anything were to happen. Packs are on, heavy like usual, we stepped foot onto the trial all happy. The eight of us tried to stay together but we all hiked at different speeds. In the front of the group was the younger of the eight; Wyatt, Nathan, and myself. In the middle were the middle-aged; Carl, Shan, and Dave. Bring up the rear that just hiked at their speed and did not care when they arrived at to the camp spot. The first night we stayed up on a hill overlooking a lake. We only spent one night at the first camp spot and then we were off to find the “golden trout” at the Titcomb Basin. As we started to climb higher and higher in altitude the sicker that I became. I was carrying a thirty-five-pound pack that ended up being passed around six people and they piggybacked for the remainder of the hike which was only four miles but the altitude also went from 9,000 feet to 10,000 feet. I became so weak that it was hard for me to carry a liter of water without wanting to pass out. We made it to our camp spot for the next three nights on the rocks at Island Lake. The view was amazing but there were so many mosquitos due to the standing pool of water what was behind our camp. From our camp spot, we did day hike for the next three days all around the area, the group also split up and went fishing or hiking. Four of the eight hiked to Titcomb basin for a late lunch on the second day, while the other was still fishing. On the warmest day of our stay at Island Lake, we went swimming in glacier water… yes, it was freezing and it took a lot of effort for us to get into the water and move around. The time spent on trial was many family time where we spent the nights around the fire playing games or going night fishing. We spent our last night in the same camp spot as the first night and hiked out the next morning.
